Labour leaders from both the past and present have paid tribute to Ann Clwyd, a former MP who passed away at the age of 86. She represented the Cynon Valley constituency in South Wales for 35 years and became the oldest woman to serve in the House of Commons until she retired in 2019. Before her political career, she worked as a journalist for the Guardian and Observer.
During her time in parliament, Clwyd held various roles, including shadow minister under Neil Kinnock. She was later removed from this position for opposing increased spending on nuclear weapons. She also served as the shadow Welsh secretary and shadow international development secretary.
After the Labour party came into government under Tony Blair, she advocated for the rights of Iraqi Kurds and supported the 2003 invasion of Iraq. Blair praised her as a courageous and principled political campaigner who fought for the poor and oppressed worldwide.
Tony Blair, Sir Keir Starmer, and other politicians expressed their sadness at her passing, remembering her as a trailblazer for women's rights and a dedicated advocate for working people.
Ann Clwyd's family confirmed that she peacefully passed away at her home in Cardiff.
