Nayanthara said sorry a few days after her movie, Annapoorni, was accused of upsetting Hindu sentiments. She posted on her Instagram account late Thursday night, reacting to the controversy that arose after the film was released on Netflix. Nayanthara stated that neither she nor her team intended to hurt anyone's feelings. This comes after news that an FIR was filed against the film, resulting in its removal from Netflix.
"In our attempt to share a positive message, we may have unintentionally caused hurt. We didn't expect a censored film, previously shown in theaters, to be removed from the OTT platform. My team and I never meant to hurt anyone's feelings, and we understand the seriousness of this issue. As someone who believes in God and frequently visits temples nationwide, hurting sentiments is the last thing I would intentionally do. To those we've touched with our words, I offer my sincere apologies," she stated.
"The intention behind 'Annapoorni' was to uplift and inspire, not to cause distress. Over the last two decades, my journey in the film industry has been guided by a singular intention – to spread positivity and foster learning from one another," Nayathara added.
What's the Annapoorni Controversy About?
Nayanthara played the lead role in Annapoorni, a film about a woman from a conservative Brahmin family aspiring to become a top chef in India. However, she faces obstacles, including her family's orthodox beliefs. The film depicts her struggles, including a scene where a classmate encourages her to eat meat by mentioning Lord Ram and claiming that he also consumed meat without committing a sin.
Former Shiv Sena leader Ramesh Solanki filed a police complaint, alleging that the film hurt the sentiments of the Hindu community and was "anti-Hindu." The film was eventually removed from Netflix.
