A forest official in Odisha's Similipal sanctuary, named Mati Hansda, was killed by poachers. The incident took place during a patrol when an exchange of gunfire occurred between the forest department team and six armed poachers at Badachachran beat. Hansda was hit by a bullet fired by the poachers and was taken to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Hansda was stationed at the Barahakumuda range in Simlipal. RCCF Simlipal Division Prakash Chand Gogineni confirmed the incident and stated that the attackers have been identified and the police have been informed.
Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, who is from Odisha, criticized the state government, expressing concern over the deteriorating law and order situation. He highlighted that criminals seem to have the confidence to commit crimes and evade punishment.
IG Police (Eastern Range) Himanshu Kumar Lal mentioned that three suspects have been detained, and the search operation in the area is ongoing. The main accused is expected to be arrested soon.
Previously, on May 22, another forest guard was shot dead by poachers at Simlipal Tiger Reserve.
