Heatwave Claims 98 Lives in North India, Red Alert Issued

North India experienced a severe heatwave, resulting in the unfortunate deaths of 98 individuals in Uttar Pradesh (UP) and Bihar. UP reported 54 deaths, while Bihar reported 44 deaths within the past three days. According to a report by India Today, approximately 400 people were admitted to a district hospital in Ballia, complaining of fever, difficulty in breathing, and other health complications during the same three-day period. Out of these patients, 54 sadly lost their lives between June 15 and June 17. An official stated that most of the admitted patients were above the age of 60 and already had existing health issues. The extreme heat worsened their conditions, leading to heart attacks, brain strokes, and cases of diarrhea, which were the main causes of death. In response to the situation, a team of doctors from Lucknow was called in to investigate the cause of these deaths. The Chief Medical Superintendent of the District Hospital, Diwakar Singh, mentioned that measures such as providing fans, coolers, and air conditioners were implemented in the hospital to prevent heat strokes for both patients and staff. The number of doctors and paramedical staff was also increased to handle the high number of patients. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) recorded a maximum temperature of 42.2 degrees Celsius in Ballia on Friday. In Bihar, 44 people lost their lives in the past 24 hours due to the severe heat. Among these, 35 deaths occurred in Patna, 19 in Nalanda Medical College and Hospital (NMCH), 16 in PMCH, and 9 in other districts of the state.
