A 35-year-old lawyer from Prayagraj, UP, got sick and had to go to the hospital after finding a dead rat in his vegetarian meal from Barbeque Nation in Mumbai. The lawyer, Rajeev Shukla, shared pictures of the rat in his food on social media, describing the incident that happened on January 8th, 2024.
During his visit to Mumbai, Shukla ordered a Classic Veg Meal Box from Barbeque Nation in Worli through an online platform. To his surprise, the meal included a dead rat and cockroaches in the Dal Makhani. After eating the contaminated food, Shukla experienced stomach problems and had to seek medical help at B Y L Nair Hospital.
Expressing his disappointment, Shukla said, “I came all the way from Prayagraj to explore Mumbai, but this might be my last trip. I am a Brahmin and a pure vegetarian, but my Barbeque Nation order gave me the shock of my life. The food had a dead rat and cockroaches. I suffered from food poisoning and got admitted to Nair hospital,” as reported by the Free Press Journal.
Shukla informed Barbeque Nation about the contamination issue through email, stating, “Received food with rat and insect, and unfortunately, I consumed its major portion. This is just not done since I am a vegetarian, also this is intolerable and I feel like puking; vomited already and it’s continuously running in my head and giving me nausea. Food business is (intended) to keep us alive and not to kill us.”
Despite receiving a response from the restaurant, no representative visited the hospital, and Shukla had to bear the expenses. The response from ‘Manoj CRS Team, Barbeque Nation,’ was apologetic but seemed lackadaisical.
Frustrated, Shukla took matters into his own hands six days later by filing an FIR against the owner, manager, and chef of Barbeque Nation at Nagpada Police Station.
He shared visuals of the official documentation on social media to maintain transparency. As of now, there hasn't been a significant update in the case.
