Imran Khan's Exclusive: Unable to Speak with Pakistan Army Chief

Addressing rumors, Imran Khan, the Chairman of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) and former Prime Minister, stated that no "minus one plan" had been proposed by PTI Vice-Chairman Shah Mehmood Qureshi. Qureshi, who served as Pakistan's foreign affairs minister from 2018 to 2022 during Khan's regime, was recently released by a Pakistani court following his arrest during violent protests on May 9. Qureshi, 66, has faced multiple arrests since then.

Imran Khan emphasized his stance on not engaging in deals or power politics, highlighting that his involvement in politics is solely driven by a cause and mission. He expressed a desire to have a conversation with Army Chief Asim Munir but stated that the army chief was not willing to engage. Khan clarified that his intent for dialogue was for the betterment of the nation and not for personal interests.

Khan's comments came after the country's powerful Army vowed to hold a "court martial" for the individuals deemed responsible for the violent events of May 9. Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah had accused Khan of planning the nationwide violence that occurred after his arrest in a corruption case. Khan expressed concern over being tried in a military court, considering it to be an infringement on democracy and justice in Pakistan.

The Pakistani army has pledged to take strict legal action against the "planners and masterminds" behind the violence, characterizing it as a politically-driven rebellion against the state. The trial of individuals involved in attacks on military installations has already commenced. Defence Minister Khawaja Asif hinted at the possibility of Khan being tried in a military court, based on the federal cabinet's decision to prosecute protesters who vandalized military properties on May 9 under the Army Act and Official Secrets Act.
