India reported 375 new cases of COVID-19, and the current active infections are down to 3,075, as per the health ministry's update on Sunday. Two deaths were recorded in Karnataka within 24 hours, based on the latest 8 am data.
The daily cases had reduced to double digits until December 5 but rose again due to a new variant and cold weather conditions. After December 5, the highest single-day increase was 841 cases on December 31, 2023, constituting 0.2% of the peak cases in May 2021.
About 92% of the active cases are recovering under home isolation. The data available indicates that the JN.1 variant is not causing a significant increase in new cases, hospitalization, or mortality.
India has experienced three waves of COVID-19, with the peak during the delta wave in April-June 2021, where 414,188 new cases and 3,915 deaths were reported on May 7, 2021.
Since the beginning of the pandemic in early 2020, more than 4.5 crore people have been infected, and over 5.3 lakh deaths have occurred in the country in about four years.
The number of recoveries exceeds 4.4 crore, leading to a national recovery rate of 98.81%. The ministry's website reports the administration of 220.67 crore doses of COVID-19 vaccines in the country.
