Cosmetic Sales Skyrocket in India: Rs 5,000 Crore Sold in 6 Months

A recent study by Kantar Worldpanel found that in the past six months, people in India spent a lot of money, around Rs 5,000 crore, on things like makeup. They bought over 100 million cosmetic items like lipstick, nail polish, and eyeliner.

The study discovered that in six months, Indians spent about Rs 1,214 on colorful makeup. The biggest chunk of this spending, 38%, went towards lip products, followed by nail products. This shows that people like buying different types of makeup.

According to K Ramakrishnan, who manages Kantar's Worldpanel Division in South Asia, more women joining the workforce will make the makeup industry even better. He said that Asia, especially places like South Korea, is where new beauty trends start.

The study also saw that working women contribute a lot to the makeup industry. They spend 1.6 times more money on makeup, both online and offline, compared to other people. In the third quarter of 2023, Shoppers Stop reported over 150,000 makeovers.

This increase in makeup buying wasn't seen across all of India, only in the top 10 cities like Delhi and Mumbai. Out of the Rs. 5,000 crore spent, 40% was spent online. This is being called India's "cosmetic boom" because young people are getting influenced by social media, and stores' ads make one-third of the purchases.

Before, people mostly bought basic makeup like kajal and lipstick. But now, they want things like primers, eye shadows, and concealers. Younger people prefer primers and tinted lip balms, while older people like lipsticks and nail polish.
