Telangana's Home Minister, Mohammad Mahmood Ali, sparked controversy with his comments on women's clothing.
Telangana's Home Minister, Mohammad Mahmood Ali, sparked controversy with his comments on women's clothing. The incident occurred after burqa-clad students in Hyderabad claimed that they were denied entry to the KV Ranga Reddy Degree College for Women because of their attire during an exam. In response to the allegations, the minister stated that women should cover themselves as much as possible, emphasizing the importance of adhering to Hindu or Islamic dressing practices rather than following European culture. He further mentioned that the matter would be investigated and appropriate action would be taken.
Some students arrived at the college gates wearing burqas for the exam but were reportedly asked by the staff to remove them before entering the examination hall. The students alleged that they were barred from entering the exam hall for almost half an hour. Eventually, they had to remove their burqas in order to take the exam.
The college authorities had allegedly instructed students not to wear burqas from the following day, which went against the examination rules. The parents of the affected students filed complaints with Home Minister Mahmood Ali, who expressed that it was unfair to prevent female students wearing burqas from entering the examination center.
As a result of the incident, some students' families approached Telangana's Home Minister, Mohammad Mahmood Ali, to address the issue.
