The Tamil film "Por Thozhil" was released on June 9, 2023. Directed by Vignesh Raja, it stars Sarath Kumar, Ashok Selvan, and Nikhila Vimal in prominent roles. The 147-minute thriller keeps viewers engaged with its clever storytelling, creativity, and suspenseful build-up. The plot revolves around a rookie and an experienced police officer who join forces to capture a serial killer. Here is our review of "Por Thozhil."
Set in 2010, the story follows the consecutive murders of two women, leaving the police without any leads. Senior police officer Loganathan (played by Sarath Kumar) and recruit Prakash (portrayed by Ashok Selvan) are assigned to investigate the case. The narrative explores how Loganathan's experience and practical knowledge, combined with Prakash's theoretical understanding, help them solve the mystery.
Director Vignesh Raja delivers a straightforward and engaging plot that maintains suspense and anticipation until the end. The film also delves into the impact of childhood trauma caused by parents. Alfred Prakash and Vignesh Raja collaborate to present a unique screenplay.
Prakash's character is portrayed as timid from the very beginning, while Loganathan exudes a commanding presence as a stern police officer. Their conflicting opinions due to Prakash's inexperience and bookish knowledge often lead to clashes between the two. Nikhila Vimal plays an important role in the film, although her screen time is relatively limited, she leaves a lasting impression in all her scenes. The late Sarath Babu also contributes to the script with his mature performance, despite having minimal screen time.
Jakes Bejoy's exceptional background score elevates many crucial scenes, although the excessive use of music throughout the film becomes dull by the end. Cinematographer Kalaiselvan Sivaji deserves credit for the beautifully shot scenes, particularly the railway gate scene before the intermission, which showcases his remarkable talent.
Throughout the movie, the filmmakers drop subtle hints and clues, engaging the audience in guessing the identity of the killer. This approach keeps viewers captivated, paying attention to every detail and making the overall experience more intriguing.
While the movie concludes on a positive note without disappointments, it would have been more compelling if the murderer's backstory had been explained in greater detail to convey a powerful message to the audience. "Por Thozhil" is a must-watch in theaters.
