Stanley Tucci on Straight Actors Playing Gay Roles
Stanley Tucci expressed his belief that straight actors should have the opportunity to portray gay characters, as acting is about playing diverse roles. He mentioned this during an interview for the BBC's Desert Island Discs. Tucci sees performing on stage or screen as a secure space to embody various characters, as he feels more comfortable there than in real-life social situations.
Addressing criticism he received for playing a gay character in the film Supernova, Tucci mentioned that he appreciates when gay men approach him and express their approval of his portrayal in movies like The Devil Wears Prada and Supernova. He believes that actors should be able to play different people and that it's a positive thing when done correctly.
In a similar vein, actor Ben Whishaw shared his perspective on the matter, acknowledging the discussions surrounding straight actors playing gay roles. He emphasized the importance of open dialogue and understanding, rather than disagreement. Whishaw praised Eddie Redmayne's performance in The Danish Girl as a trans pioneer and suggested that going forward, roles like these should be given to individuals who have personal experience related to the character.
Benedict Cumberbatch also discussed his portrayal of a gay character in the Netflix film The Power of the Dog, acknowledging that careful thought was given to the role.
